A hacker turned a 330-satoshi Bitcoin deposit—roughly 25 cents—into 46.1 billion unbacked syBTC on Symbiosis’ Bitcoin Bridge. The exploit exposed two software flaws and drained liquidity providers.
- The attacker made 12 bogus deposits across BNB Chain, Ethereum and Rootstock in about four minutes.
- A faulty transaction check granted administrator privileges; a negative-fee bug enabled arbitrary token creation.
- Symbiosis estimates preliminary losses at 9.97 BTC, roughly $770,000, and has taken the bridge offline.
This was not a Bitcoin supply hack—it was a bridge accounting failure, but the contagion risk is real wherever wrapped BTC depends on centralized minting logic. Traders should avoid affected pools and bridges until the rewrite, compensation plan and independent audit are complete.
